First of all, I’m somewhat of a crazy cat lady. If you browse my website, you’ll see lots of paintings of rainbow colored felines. I have three cats (Karma, Panda Bear, and Mr. Samadhi), and most of my cat paintings are based upon them.
Here’s a video of my best friend Mr. Samadhi doing tricks…yes, I’ve even taken the time to teach my cats tricks. I told you I was a crazy cat lady! LOL 🙂
Okay, so enough about my love of cats. I know you’re really here to learn about my personal history and how it has influenced my art. I’ve been painting for around 10 years; although, I didn’t throw myself into it fully until about five years ago. I work mainly with acrylics, but I also create digital art and drawings from time to time. See my paintings here.
I live in Wichita, Kansas. I have a home-based studio (photo of me painting to the left) and an art gallery in Wichita’s Towne West Mall.
I’m currently focusing on painting animals in a colorful style that I call visionary impressionism. My visionary impressionist paintings can pretty much be thought of as Impressionism 2.0. I paint the light and movement that I observe with my eyes, like the classical Impressionists did, but I also paint what I feel emotionally and sense intuitively.
Each painting focuses on a particular animal. Since animals will not hold still for me to look at them while I paint, I begin by photographing them. I enjoy visiting zoos to take these photographs. After I choose the best photo, I print and tape it to my wall so that the animal can “model” for me. Then I paint each painting by hand with the acrylics. Watch a video of me painting here.
I regularly participate in both regional and international exhibitions. Most notably, my book Lysergic was included in an exhibit at the New Museum in New York City, and my painting entitled “Lysergic Mandala” was featured in an exhibit in London, England. I also often show my work at juried fine art fairs and music festivals throughout the Midwest. See my show schedule here.
Education and History:
I earned an Associate of Arts degree in 2-D Design from Allen County Community College in the year 2000, when I was 18 years old. Several years later, I started my first sole proprietorship providing website design and graphic design services for small businesses in my area.
Over the years, though, my interest in the human mind and spirituality grew. So I went back to college and earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Psychology. I also wrote several books about my life and the lessons I learned from the use of psychedelic drugs.
My first book, Lysergic, is on track to be made into a feature film in the next year or so. It recounts events that occurred in my life within the time period of 2000 to 2003. The book is a combination of things – a story of love, a story of abuse, and a story about the psychedelic experiences that exerted a profound effect upon my life. These experiences were so profound that, even though I no longer use drugs or alcohol, they’ve still irrevocably influenced how I see the world. Ultimately, these experiences have also been direct inspiration for much of my artwork.
